Practical Experience - Prior to becoming a lawyer, Vicki Grey, the principal and director of Mitchell Collins worked within the Treasury Department (money market and foreign exchange distribution desk) of a major Australian bank.  She also has in-house legal experience and experience working for a major industry association.  As such we understand ‘how the industry works’.

About Vicki Grey

Vicki Grey is a highly experienced financial services and credit regulation lawyer with more than 20 years of experience. In addition to her advisory work in the financial services and credit sectors, Vicki regularly works with clients on the establishment and on-going development of new products and businesses. She is passionate about assisting clients to find ways to comply with the law, not just providing her clients with uncommercial ‘black letter law’ advice. Vicki is regularly asked to speak on financial services and credit regulatory issues.

Prior to entering the legal profession, Vicki worked as a financial markets dealer for one of Australia’s major banks. This extensive commercial experience enables her to understand the practical and business issues facing her clients and provide a ‘solutions based service’ in the highly regulated world of financial services and consumer credit.

Vicki’s career began as a professional ballerina after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Dance at the Victoria College of the Arts. In 2005 Vicki joined Gadens Lawyers which is now part of the global firm Dentons and rose to the position of Partner after only two years.  From here, Vicki moved to Kemp Strang Lawyers in June 2013 before establishing Mitchell Collins in November 2018.

The Story behind the name

Mitchell Collins is named after Australia’s first female judge, Dame Roma Mitchell and the first judge advocate appointed to the colony of New South Wales, Lieutenant Governor David Collins.

Dame Roma Flinders Mitchell (CBE) (DBE) (AC) was an Australian lawyer, judge and state governor. In 1965, Roma Mitchell was made a Justice of the Supreme Court of South Australia and became the first female judge in Australia.  Dame Roma was Governor of South Australia from1991 to 1996 and as such was also the first female Governor in Australia.

Lieutenant Governor David Collins.  When the British government decided to establish a convict settlement in New South Wales in1786, David Collins was commissioned as Deputy Judge Advocate of the proposed new colony.  At Sydney Cove on 7 February 1788, Collins presided over the formal inauguration of the colony. Throughout his time in the colony he was keenly aware of his responsibility towards the convicts in his charge and he is recognised as working conscientiously for their welfare.
